Charles L Martin's Blog

Charles L Martin has spent a lifetime experiencing hard won sales and marketing battles in the fashion (7th Avenue), film (Hollywood), beverage (Worldwide), and financial industries (SoCal).

His clients, past and present, include Liz Claiborne, Tommy Hilfiger, Esprit, D.F. Sanders & Co., more than 25 A-List actors and producers in film, Rhino Chaser's Beer, Signature Nannies, among others. By clients, he sometimes means "bosses" and sometimes "clients".

The concept of Anticipation Marketing is his specialty.

He loves marketers and sales hacks. He loves (or dislikes) your company. His rants may inspire you. They may ignite you. Either way, it's all good.

    The misleading notion

    Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

I’ve been saying this for years to friends that boast that they earn all these miles and go all these places.  But if you put pen to paper, you realize that it’s all a very expensive hoax.  Now, with the airlines even more stressed, this will get worse.  [note - I carry the AA card, [...]

    Sometimes the ugly is ok

    Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Thinking today that the ugly can be alright.  The ugly can rule if it’s useful.
Take into account TinyURL.  Ugly, but gosh darnit a billion hits a month.  Geezus.  Imagine their Google Adwords deposits.  The joke’s on all the millions spent on flash, web 2.0, etc etc.
Take into account how basic Google really is.
    These sites are the [...]

    Rest in peace Randy Pausch

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

    RIP Randy…
One of your basic tenets was “stick to the fundamentals”.
I agree.  Thanks for the great book, buddy.
Something many of us forget. Sometimes we think our jobs and the projects we manage are oh so more important if we make it more complicated.  Take off the layers and you’ll see how it works just fine [...]

    Same ol Same ol

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

Red Sox Mike sent this one over.  The HH predicts new airfares will hit the scene in the early 4th Q of 2008.  New meaning pricing relative to the real costs of carrying passengers.  Also look for special business deals where companies can “hedge” their travel expenses by buying segments at cheaper prices in advance.

    Many know the tricks now…

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

Somebody from someplace gave me this link.  It’s the stuff I live by and have used to solve the daily grind.   But it’s interesting if you take this strategy to the Gold Medal event — modifying a current mortgage.  Stay tuned to see if the HH’s clip get’s on Consumerist’s site.

    Take one for your team

    Monday, August 4th, 2008

How many times this week or month have you sat on your opinions and just lived with the results or decisions of your boss without a peep?
Gather up the important stuff and use it when it’s really important.  In the past week I’ve remembered that this is the smarter way to approach changes that you [...]
