You see what happened didn’t you?

By Charles Martin | September 8, 2008

Now that we all race for the largest number of LinkedIn and Facebook friends, you create a list of people you don’t really know that well.  Sure, your best of best colleagues are on the list, but so are people that you haven’t seen or heard from in eons.

As a test, I sent LinkedIn invites to people at a company I haven’t done business with in 7 years.  I did a lot of business back then, but haven’t heard hide nor hair nor have I sent any xmas or birthday cards.  I don’t even know their birthdays.  EVERY one of these folks “accepted my invitation”.

The social utility market (I am developing in this market too) is transparent but misleading.  We all know Gladwell’s theories on Connecting and Salesmanship, but I think this takes it a bit far.

Just some acknowledgement that you don’t really know that guy in India like your Facebook says you do and I predict that Facebook and LinkedIn will capitalize on this one day.
