Chipotle is aces with equal opportunity

By Charles Martin | April 20, 2009

As I’ve ranted on a bad website ordering process by Chipotle, I wanted to give fair share to a good experience I had at an LA area store today.

The experience wasn’t really an experience but I met a general manager today that chatted me up.  This guy we’ll call Jack told me he started with Chipotle about four years ago as a line cook.  Jack cooked chicken and tasty barbacoa while endless business minded white folk ate up his food.  Their stuff is good.  It’s not the most fabulous Mexican fare I’ve had, but it’s simple and fresh and great for lunch.

Jack went on to tell me he worked from that line cook job to kitchen manager to service manager to finally becoming general manager of his own store in under four years.  His English was really good.  He has a nice disposition.  And boy, you could tell he liked his gig.

What struck me was how Chipotle took him seriously and granted him a really nice job with probably lots of perks.  Of course he worked hard for it. When you get hired at a fast-food joint they always tell you about moving up but this really happened.  These guys are a lot nicer to work for than Taco Bell too.

Good on you Chipotle and good luck Jack.  Hope you’re the CEO one day.

Now fix that online ordering thing arriba arriba!

You mean, if you work hard in this country you still have the chance to get ahead? I thought the government was trying to kill that upwardly mobile desire???
