Hotel price reductions – your neighbor is a thug

By Charles Martin | May 18, 2009

We stayed at a place this past weekend that we loved last year in the San Diego area. Last year, they held their own as number one ranked on TripAdvisor, a well regarded and tested site by the Hothead.  We had a great time and have sent friends since.

Since the economy is killing hotels in big cities and small, there are cutbacks. There’s something happening which you probably didn’t consider. When hotels lower prices, they invite folks that couldn’t afford it before. This exact dilemma met us head-on this past weekend. We went down to the awesome pool area that lies right on the beach only to be met by a half dozen young thuggish punks. They were probably fine kids, but not what I was envisioning when we planned this trip last minute.  The smoking at the pool.  The full body tats.  The foul language. Not so family.

Reassess the better pricing that you might see online and be aware that things have probably changed at your favorite summer hotel. Other services like free breakfast and free parking were all reduced at this place as well.  The money is simply not there.
