Lots of loose ends…

By Charles Martin | September 15, 2009

[Brian Eno] hosts this post.

I wanted to just talk about a bunch of little things that are around and not stink it up with many big posts.

Jay Leno -

Thought the new show was a rehab of his old show.  If this is what’s gonna kill prime time at 10, then whatever gets killed deserves it.  Sure, he had controversial Kanye.  But Kanye is always controversial.  Who cares?

I thought for sure Jay’s sph*n*ter joke on gay bars was gonna get hit by the gay groups but they have less a radar than me — uh oh.  He also talked on himself when he called out to his band leader “Kevin Eubanks” as his soul mate and then told Seinfeld that a guy is dumb if he calls anyone other than his wife his soul mate.  I’m sure it was all in fun, but Jay’s not watching his words.

I hope this thing dies down.  The best thing Jay does is Jay’s Garage.  Now, that’s worth worrying about.

Football premier week –

Thanks to @scubagroves for breaking in Treehouse’s immense offering for football watchers.  We fattened him up and sent off to the dog park.

I’m sick of two phrases — “explosive” and “running down hill”.  Football, like many other media entities, is searching to connect the old with the new.

The first games were so-so.  I’m hoping it gets better.  Not a lot of drama.  Not a lot of close stuff. Everyone thinks the Cowboys are going to have a bad year.  Talk on Romo is bad too.  Oh well.

Going to the game this year with @campbrand and our boys, so I’m stoked either way.

Life Change –

I’m going to do some good and big changes over the course of the next month to get ready for a crisp and aggressive fall.  There are opportunities that I’ve come across that enhance the way I do things.  I need a makeover too.  I’ve got little ones you know.  And we’re only in the first grade on one of them and I want to be the coolest (old) dad at high school graduation.  So, you’ll see me making subtle changes and maybe you’ll pass me at the mall because I look too cool for the Charles we always knew.

I bring this up because as I’ve said in past posts, lots of people around me are making big changes.  They’re scary ones.  In fact, ‘ol Joe Camp just hightailed it to Bell Buckle, TN for his fourth or fifth act and he’s over 70.  That makes me feel like I can do anything at my age!  He had a post recently that said “Make a Move!”.  Joe really inspires people and he’s not had all roses.  So, stand up and MAKE THAT DAMN CHANGE!  Quit worrying about it and…

Just Do It.  Nike had it right.

And so I am.

Speaking of Nike –

Saw a wonderful documentary with @aramy the other night called “Art and Copy”. It’s a documentary on the ad biz and the sea change of the way the creative department was regarded after the mid-60s.  This change perpetuated what we know as great advertising — Nike.  Apple.  Got Milk.  Braniff.  It’s a must see if it comes to your town.

I’m old so nostalgia makes me excited. I  loved watching the old “Plain Planes” ads that were done right in Big D where I grew up.  Dallas was home to Braniff and we AA kids always fought at school with the Braniff kids.  I miss the days of planes like this — sans smoking.
